Sue Thom, 47, from Worthing, was the first person to sign up to complete the 7 mile route for this year’s St Barnabas House Night to Remember midnight walk, taking place on Saturday 25 June. Having completed the event for the first time in June 2015 and raised £500, this year Sue has persuaded colleagues from White Meadows Primary Academy to take part with her and together they have formed ‘The White Meadows Wanderers’ team. Joining Sue will be Louisa Cook, 36, Kirsty Porter, 37, Hayley Clifton-Bowley, 37, Jade Twine, 22, Joanna Schmidt, 39, Lorraine McNab, 53, and Lucy Scriven, 36.
The seven ladies are aiming to raise £600 and have set up a JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/susan-thom where supporters can donate online. All monies raised at the Night to Remember will provide vital funding for the St Barnabas House Hospice at Home night service. The aim of the event is to double the number of patients cared for each year, in a bid to reach everyone who needs hospice care.
This year Sue will be walking as a ‘Superstar’ for the event. Her enthusiasm in getting such a large group together created one free place on the team. Sue will also be rewarded with a bright pink ‘Superstar’ hoodie to wear on the night, as a thank you for going the extra mile and being such a great ambassador for the hospice. In addition, since completing the 2015 Night to Remember Sue has lost over five stone in weight, and feels so much better for having improved her overall health and fitness.
Inspired and energised by the great atmosphere and feeling of togetherness at last year’s event, Sue said: “I am really looking forward to the walk this year, and want to make it even more fun. I experienced pink-envy last year watching so many ladies dressed in pink headbands, pink fluffy tutus, pink glittery scarves so our team will be sourcing some of these fun props and dressing up as well this year.”
Sue continued: “Completing the Night to Remember walk is the most wonderful experience, and the atmosphere is incredible. Even the public are amazing, cheering on the walkers along the route. Last year we passed a hotel on Worthing seafront where a wedding party rushed out to hand us all sweets, and other supporters had created an enormous message of encouragement in pebbles on the promenade for all to see.
“Anybody can do it – any age, any ability, any level of fitness. You can pace yourself and just take your time. All the walkers were so friendly, but what was especially wonderful for us was the way the experience of walking as a team of colleagues from school brought us closer together as friends. Once again we have received great support from the Events Team at St Barnabas, who have provided us with fundraising materials and plenty of advice to help us make the most of the experience and our fundraising efforts. To any ladies thinking of signing up for this year’s event I would say just go for it!”
